{"id":98,"date":"2022-11-18T22:19:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T04:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dark-night.org\/?p=98"},"modified":"2023-12-21T22:04:15","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T04:04:15","slug":"the-canary-in-the-coal-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dark-night.org\/index.php\/2022\/11\/18\/the-canary-in-the-coal-mine\/","title":{"rendered":"The Canary in the Coal Mine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the old days, canaries were used in coal mines to warn of poisonous gas.&nbsp; If there were any gas, the birds would stop singing and drop from their perches; they\u2019d be the warning that conditions were harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a>Throughout my life, I have had many periods of unemployment when the symptoms of the disease simply made work impossible.&nbsp; When I was more stable,I often had trouble finding work because my work history was spotty.&nbsp; Once I found a job, I could usually work as well as anyone else.&nbsp; However, I was the new guy.&nbsp; I never had much time on the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the economy would go into a recession, companies often had to lay off employees \u2013 even those who were good workers.&nbsp; Usually they would lay off the workers who had the least amount of time on the job \u2013 which was often me.
